Luton to Heathrow, down the M1

Luton to Heathrow chauffeur service is a private car with a licensed driver, booked before you fly, that meets you at London Luton Airport and delivers you to your Heathrow departure terminal. Of all the routes linking Heathrow with another London airport, this one is the shortest by time.

The drive runs about 37 miles and takes around 49 minutes in normal traffic. It's motorway all the way: the M1 south and the western arc of the M25.

Your chauffeur tracks the flight into Luton, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and gives you an hour of free waiting from landing. Every driver is licensed by Transport for London and DBS-checked, and Vinta holds TfL Operator Licence 73850301.

Passengers on this run usually land at Luton on an easyJet or Wizz Air flight from Europe and fly long-haul from Heathrow. Separate tickets mean they reclaim their bags at Luton and check them in again at Heathrow, which the car makes simple. The short drive also leaves more of the connection for Heathrow's own queues.

The sections below cover the motorway route, where you're met and dropped, the rail and coach alternatives, how much time to leave between flights, and the car to choose for long-haul luggage.

Executive chauffeur service
M1 junction 10 to 6a · M25 junctions 21 to 15

M1 south, M25 west

Leaving the airport at junction 10, the car takes the M1 south to where it meets the M25 at junction 21. It then runs anticlockwise past the M40 at junction 16 and leaves at junction 15 for Heathrow's central terminals, or junction 14 for Terminal 4.

The M25 between junctions 16 and 15 is often the slowest part, especially on weekday mornings. Your chauffeur checks it before you land, and the fare stays as quoted however the traffic behaves.

Your pickup at Luton

Luton has one terminal, and your driver waits in its arrivals hall with your name. They'll take the trolley once you've cleared baggage reclaim and lead you to the car.

Arrivals from Schengen countries pass through UK border control first, which can take a while at busy times, while flights from inside the Common Travel Area, such as Dublin, usually reach the arrivals hall sooner. Because your flight is tracked, the chauffeur's timing follows your real landing rather than the schedule.

Dropped at the right Heathrow terminal

Heathrow has four terminals in use. Your flight number tells the driver where to go: Terminal 5 for British Airways, Terminal 2 for many Star Alliance airlines, or Terminals 3 and 4 for others. The car sets you down at departures.

Thameslink and the Elizabeth line, or a car

Rail between the two airports means the Luton DART to Luton Airport Parkway, Thameslink south to Farringdon and the Elizabeth line west to Heathrow. That's three separate legs and two changes with long-haul cases. A direct coach also runs, cheaper per seat but on a timetable.

In a car it's a single journey of under an hour. For couples and families with big bags, that's the practical answer.

Morning peaks on the western M25

Weekday mornings between 07:00 and 10:00 are the slowest times on the section past the M40 and the Heathrow junctions. A landing at Luton before 06:30 or after 10:00 usually brings the drive in under the hour.

Business travellers flying long-haul

Consultants and engineers based in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire sometimes start a long-haul trip by flying into Luton from a European client visit. The car covers the gap between the airports while you reply to email or rest before the long flight.

Families heading off on a long-haul holiday

Some families fly into Luton from a short break and out of Heathrow on a long-haul holiday within the same week. Child and booster seats can be fitted on request, so the car is ready when you land.

Overnight before an early Heathrow flight

For a morning departure, many travellers land at Luton the evening before and stay near Heathrow. Give the hotel as your drop-off and the fare is calculated for it, so the morning starts a short shuttle ride from your terminal.

A safe connection time

Allow three and a half hours between landing at Luton and a long-haul departure from Heathrow. Border checks at Luton, the 49-minute drive and Heathrow's security all need room, and long-haul check-in usually closes 60 minutes before take-off.

Space for long-haul bags

Two people with large cases fit a Business Class saloon. A family of up to 7 with 7 bags fits the Business Van/SUV, a Mercedes V-Class, and the Mercedes-Benz Vito takes 8 passengers with 10 cases.
