Gatwick to Luton by private car

Gatwick to Luton chauffeur service is a pre-booked private car that carries you from Gatwick, in West Sussex, to London Luton Airport in Bedfordshire. The airports sit on opposite sides of the capital, so this is one of the longer journeys between them.

The route measures about 73 miles and takes around 84 minutes in normal traffic. It follows the western half of the M25, past Heathrow, before turning up the M1.

The driver tracks your flight, waits in Gatwick arrivals with a name board and gives you 60 minutes after landing before any waiting charge could apply. Each chauffeur is licensed by Transport for London and DBS-checked, and Vinta operates under TfL Operator Licence 73850301.

Most clients here are catching an easyJet or Wizz Air flight from Luton after arriving at Gatwick, or they're families heading home to Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire after a holiday. Business travellers with meetings near Luton regularly book it as well.

Read on for the motorway route, the Gatwick pickup and Luton set-down, how the direct Thameslink train compares, and the timing and vehicles that suit a long drive.

Executive chauffeur service
M25 junction 7 to 21 · M1 north

Clockwise past Heathrow to the M1

From the M23 the car joins the M25 at junction 7 and travels clockwise through Surrey, past the M3 and the Heathrow junctions, and on to the M40 interchange. At junction 21 it switches to the M1 and leaves at junction 10 for Luton Airport.

The section between junctions 10 and 16, around Heathrow, carries the heaviest traffic. The chauffeur times the run to avoid it where your flight allows and checks for incidents before setting off, while your fare stays fixed.

Collected at Gatwick, set down at Luton

The driver meets you in the arrivals hall at North or South Terminal, holding your name. They load the luggage at the terminal car park and you're heading north within minutes.

Luton's single terminal makes the drop straightforward. The car stops at the front of departures, closer than the DART shuttle that serves rail passengers.

Why the motorway loop beats the centre

Driving through London between these airports would mean the A23, the South Circular or the West End, then the A1 or M1 north, with hundreds of traffic lights along the way. The M25 loop is longer in miles but far steadier in time.

It also keeps the car clear of the Congestion Charge zone, and it gives the driver several places to change plan if one junction jams.

Heading home to Hertfordshire or Bedfordshire

Not everyone on this route is catching a flight. Some land at Gatwick and live near Luton, Harpenden, St Albans or Dunstable, and want to get home without the train.

Enter your home address as the drop-off when booking and the same service takes you to your door instead of the airport, on a fare calculated for that exact journey.

The Thameslink train, weighed honestly

Unusually, a direct train links these airports. Thameslink runs from Gatwick Airport station through central London to Luton Airport Parkway, where the Luton DART shuttle takes you up to the terminal. It's a genuine rival for a solo traveller with a small bag. Between 07:00 and 09:30, though, those trains fill with commuters through central London, and a large case is hard to place.

The car wins for families, groups and late arrivals. It has room for car seats and big cases, doesn't depend on a train that stops at every central London station, and runs when evening services thin out.

Evening and night arrivals

Flights landing at Gatwick after 21:00 often meet an easier M25. Your chauffeur works to your landing time, whatever the hour.

Comfort on a longer drive

At well over an hour, this is a drive where the details count. There's bottled water in the car, room to stretch out, and a driver who'll stop at South Mimms services near junction 23 if a child or a tired traveller needs a break.

Tell the chauffeur what you'd like, whether that's a quiet cabin to sleep or the radio on, and they'll take it from there.

A connection time for Luton

Allow four hours between your Gatwick landing and a Luton departure. The drive alone is close to an hour and a half, and both easyJet and Wizz Air close bag drop 40 minutes before take-off. On summer Saturdays, add another half hour for holiday traffic.

Holiday luggage and car seats

A family of five with holiday cases fits the Business Van/SUV, which carries 7 passengers and 7 bags. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before the car reaches Gatwick.
